Hulihuli Chicken

Another must see place on the Puna coast is Ahalanui Warm Pond.

We were getting hungry by this time and stopped at a vending stand selling oh hot dogs, chips & soda. The basics: fat, salt & sugar.

Her name is ? and she was very kind. We requested a photo with her. Star brings his friend Shea down here quite often...but that's another story for another page.

We went over to the edge of the pond, which wasn't as crowded as it can be, to have a photo taken.

Tiki Jr., who has been strangely quiet and stayed in the car alot, during much of RG's visit, passed wind and started giggling uncontrollably.

Star decided to opt out of the next shot and Tiki Jr. said he could suit himself with a big grin.

There are many hot ponds in Puna. The area, after all, is volcanic and sits atop a volcanic rift that could literally start oozing lava at any minute and has in the semi recent past. Homeowners insurance ain't cheap in Puna. Of course, you have to actually live in a house to know this. Many of Puna's inhabitants don't seem to care.

All of this volcanic geothermal activity super heats ground and surface water to create a warm bath which many people believe has therapeutic qualities. Just don't let an eel bite your rear. They like the warm too.

The lifeguard stepped away for a few minutes and asked RG to keep an eye open. Gratefully no one needed rescued.

We had wandered over to sit at a picnic table and take in the atmosphere of the place and heard a faint clucking frantic sound coming from a bbq pit nearby.

Tiki Jr. was the first to arrive on the scene and began to scream "Call 911, call the Humane Society" at the top of his little lungs over and over.

Within the bbq laying on the grate was none other than a chicken saying "Oh please help me. I don't wanna be a hulihuli (bbq) chicken. I want to live." In a moaning chickeny clucking sort of whine.

RG immediately turned to Star for assistance. It took a bit of doing but we finally managed to hook Mc. Chicken who was gratefully cackling his thank yous and how he had decided he wanted to live and how we had come along and rescued him and so on and so forth. Phewww.

Star finally managed to pull Mc. Chicken out of the fire pit. By this time we had drawn quite a crowd and everyone clapped in delirious joy. Especially Tiki Jr.

In a rather ironic twist we took chicken dude, who we found out is named Moa and has his own MySpace account, over to another bbq pit where we sat down to listen to his story.

Sooo you dont think talking chickens exist do you welll your wrong. I came down here from planet Eggatron and we were attracted by your wailing screams of the earthling known as Rob Halford from Judas Priest.

His screams are so loud that they pentrated my cloaking device and I crashed landed on you planet during a routine planet sweep. What we didnt know is that earthlings consider chickens a delicacy especially here in Puna.

I have been here for many years now and have communicated with the Earth chickens who are forming a rebellion against all those who eat them just thought you should know.

Although I am thrilled with Earth, I must say it is dangerous being a chicken here, none the less, I am so grateful for your rescue and I will be under constant guard of Star, as he can understand my language.I have taken the name Moa Aloha which means chicken love and I have learned much about the islands and have not had contact with Eggatron for many years now.

Though I love the isles Imiss my home planet and will return someday. As for my stay here, I have grown to love all types of heavy metal music and surfing. I love to surf. I can teach you if you want to know how {talking to RG}.

I am looking forward to many adventures with Star. You can follow my adventures on my myspace page at Moa Aloha. Till then...bawkbye!!

After hearing Moa's very lengthy tale we stop to enjoy the ocean pounding away on the coastline behind us.

The cloud in the background reminded me of RGs hat so we took a picture.

We headed up the coast to one of the few surf spots in the area known as Pohoiki. We stood out on the jetty for quite sometime watching. The surf wasn't to impressive actually. RG then shared some more of his board stories with us until we were all bored and decided to head over to Kapoho Tide Pools to go snorkeling.
