Crossing The Delaware

Hosted by Fritz the Gnome

Next: Deep River Ancient Muster

Fritz and Bud were having great fun during the week of Bud's visit. They spent a lot of time doing things that Gnomes enjoy doing. They also did a bit of wandering. One day, they went to Washington Crossing State Park in New Jersey and Washington Crossing Historic Park in Pennsylvania. On the New Jersey side, they checked out the Nelson House (Ha ha, your house is old!)

Then they stopped a bit at the Johnson Ferry House. Neat sign, eh?

They weren't allowed in the actual house, but they did muck about in the garden (as Gnomes will do)...

and check out the stone barn.

Later, they took the bridge over the Delaware River to Pennsylvania. This is very near where George Washington made his very famous crossing to beat up some sleeping Hessians on Christmas in Trenton.

On the PA side, they went into an old barn where they saw many cool things. They climbed aboard one of the Durham boats used for the re-enactment of the crossing (Fritz had been aboard one before and he liked it very much).

They checked out a cannon. TJ, being a bit of a thrillseeker wondered if they would shoot him out of it back across the Delaware.

and a print of the famous GW Crossing painting.

The following info taken from the Met Museum website:
"This painting describes the historic moment when General George Washington led the American revolutionary troops across the Delaware River in order to surprise the English and Hessian troops in the Battle of Trenton the day after Christmas in 1776. Keep in mind that this reproduction is small: the original painting is more than 12 feet high and 21 feet long! Click on the image to see a larger reproduction. The artist Emanuel Leutze used a number of elements to express an emotional and patriotic message about this event."

Before leaving, they visited more cool old houses. They had a lovely time.
