After
the tour Auntie said we were all going to meet her friend
Nelson at Kekai's for a farewell cocktail. We were supposed
to stay for just two drinks. Instead...SHE TOLD PK to
go home and we stayed.
After
we finished a few drinks we headed over to Golden Gate
where a man almost immediately came up and introduced
himself.
Well
the drinks came one after another and a whole lotta
sweet talk to match. Auntie had the offered drinks and
listened. Den she got bored I guess. Tiki Jr and I had
certainly heard enough. She thanked him for the drinks
and we left.
He
followed us back into Kekai's. She ordered another drink.
He paid again. She smiled and said mahalo.
At
this point Auntie started to get a little nervous, which
in turn made us a little nervous about this guy. We
new Auntie had had enough to drink and was a bit intoxicated
at that point. She borrowed someone's cell and called
PK to pick us up at the bus stop in full view of the
HPD cameras.
She
explained to us that if we didn't keep our wits about
us and stay in plain view we may be vulnerable if anything
happened. She had now recognized him as a fairly recent
drug dealer arrival in the area.
As
soon as we sat down, the man grabbed her arm. She became
sober in an instant!!!
"Take
your hands OFF OF ME!!!" she told him calmly. At
that very moment I swear both Auntie and Tiki Jr.'s
eyes glowed red giving him the evil eye. He left us
alone from that point on and we made it home safely.
On
the way home Auntie told us "When push comes to
shove, I become something I don't like. It is in me.
But....there is also good in me. More good than anything
else because I love God!"
In
the words of Tikiyaki Sr. who was also honored with
an Exclusive Chinatown Tour back in December, "Shell
kick your ass if you act up, but shell feed you
if youre hungry."
That
said, Auntie Lynn's blog can be found at www.auntiepupule.com/blog.
Just a word of warning: She doesn't pull any punches
and tells it like it is. It is who she is, and unlike
so many people living with mental illness and within
the "system" she has found her voice through
her blog. With 10,000 hits a day she must be saying
something that people identify with. I know that I identify
with her because I grew up in it.
Thank
you Lynn for your courage, detemination and your honesty
and mahalo for participating and being Jim and I's friend.
