Ye Old Stomping Grounds, Pt. 2

I spent a lot of time wandering around Delta on my bike or on foot. As a kid things seemed to be so far away. When I was in Delta several years ago driving I realized just how small it really is. Places that took 20 minutes to get to on a bike took just minutes. There was no familiarity while driving. Everything that made each street, yard, and house unique went by as a detached blur.

As I have looked at these pictures of Delta I am reminded of just how much of a stranger I am there now. I would love to go back and just walk around town to those places where kids go unnoticed but adults stick out like a sore thumb. I guess that won't happen.

If memory serves there are (were) actually 3 park areas near the football field and high school in Delta. Did this sign always have posted hours? Sure don't remember it.

The biggest park over near the public pool is where they hold the annual "Chicken Festival" we call it Huli Huli Chicken in Hawaii. BBQ chicken for all to consume.

Rides, games, junk food and BINGO. For some reason I really enjoyed sitting there playing bingo for hours at the carnival. Probably cause I won something.

Reminds me of the school PTO carnival. I use to play bingo to win the baked goodies. I won 4 or 5 cakes one year and had to ask my cousin to help me get them home.

I don't remember this being there but it is pretty cool. From now on this shall be called the Delta Gnome Mobile! Bud will be able to take his pals Tiki Jr, Gnomar and Fritz cruising the country roads of Fulton County. GO GNOMES!

Way in the background is DHS. Good ole Delta Sr. High. I won't say that I was an outstanding student here. My one shining achievement, as a geek/dork/outcast (pick one) was being the Varsity Basketball waterboy when I was a freshman. Keith Dunbar and a few others I can't recall were seniors that year so probably 1982. Got my varsity letter that way. We moved to Florida during my sophomore year and that ended that and a chance at a scholarship.

This merry-go-round looks familiar. Was this always here or at the elementary? Who knows?

Every summer the public pool would open and I would buy a season pass. I can't remember the hours but I do recall that it would open in the morning, close at 5 p.m. for dinner and reopen from 7 to 9 p.m. It is often dark by 7 a.m. here in Hawaii and the concept of it being light outside until 9:30 p.m. is foreign to me as an adult. As a kid it was awesome!

There was a high dive board and no slide back then. The water was always cold. I recall laying and shivering on the hot pavement trying to warm up. I also recall horsing around and being told to sit out for however long that was.

Many days and evenings were spent here. I particularly remember always hoping that Heather Harris would be there. Sometimes she was, sometimes she wasn't. I have since told her I had a crush on her back then. LOL.

When I look at this picture I can hear the cadence drums playing on a Friday night. The bleachers would be full of fans, the football game would be happening and...I and my outcast friends would be outside of this fence just hanging around absorbing the energy of the place. GO GREEN!

I wonder if they would change from the Delta Panthers to the Delta Gnomes? Who do I talk to to make that happen...hehehe.

Maybe I should just try for the Delta Gnome Mobile idea and leave it at that. Come to think of it I have more information and images about Delta than anyplace else I found online including the chamber. Does that count for anything?

And finally we venture to "downtown" Delta...
